Redrock Study Task
The data-heavy first scenario of the 2026 McKinsey Solve assessment. Read a structured report, answer math-style questions, and watch the clock — fast, accurate arithmetic is everything.
What is the Redrock Study Task?
Redrock is the first scenario in the McKinsey Problem Solving Game. It’s the most quantitative module in the assessment: candidates are given a structured business report with embedded data tables, then asked to answer a sequence of math-style questions that depend entirely on parsing the report correctly.
If you took the legacy McKinsey Problem Solving Test (PST), the format will feel familiar. The difference is that Redrock is delivered inside a timed, interactive interface — meaning navigation speed and reading efficiency matter as much as the underlying maths.
Format & timing
Every question must be answered — there is no option to skip. With around three minutes per question and no lifelines, fast and accurate arithmetic is the core skill Redrock tests. Slowing down costs you time on later questions; rushing creates errors that cost you points.

Redrock FAQs
What is the Redrock Study Task?
Redrock is the data-analysis scenario in the McKinsey Solve assessment. You read a structured business report with embedded data tables, then answer a series of math-style questions — percentages, comparisons, and logical inferences — based entirely on that data. It is the most quantitative part of the assessment.
How long is Redrock and how many questions are there?
Redrock lasts about 35 minutes and is split into two parts. In the first, you are given a case and must answer 3 questions, write a written report, and create a visual report based on the data. In the second, you answer 6 shorter standalone questions that share similar themes to the case but can be answered independently.
Is Redrock the same as the old McKinsey PST?
Redrock is similar in spirit to the legacy Problem Solving Test (PST): both test quantitative reasoning from a written brief. The key difference is that Redrock runs inside a timed, interactive interface, so navigation speed and reading efficiency matter as much as the maths itself.
Do you need a calculator for Redrock?
Yes — Redrock provides an on-screen calculator, so you don’t need your own. The maths itself is not advanced (percentages, ratios, comparisons), but working quickly and accurately under time pressure, using the calculator efficiently, is the core skill the scenario tests.
How many Redrock practice tests does PSG Solver include?
PSG Solver provides three full-length Redrock simulations built from real past PSG data, each replicating the exact interface and question style. Every question comes with a detailed explanation that walks through the reasoning, so you learn how to approach the data rather than just memorising answers.
